I believe in educating the whole child; helping them to grow academically, socially, and emotionally in an enriching environment filled with opportunities for positive growth and self-assessment. I am very much a whole person-centered therapist. I believe in looking at all areas and factors that may contribute, or affect a client’s growth and development. I thrive on solving problems and seeing clients make progress. I love helping someone else achieve what they did not think was possible. It is so rewarding to look back with a client and see how far they’ve come in time. I love this profession in that there is never a dull day, a monotonous routine, or mindless work. There are definitely challenges that push me but I also love the search to “figure it out.” I get the privilege to work with a wide variety of people and teams with many skills and abilities and walk with them on a path to make a difference in their lives, whatever that may be. I absolutely love my job.

Communication underlies nearly every experience in our lives. Helping to enable and improve communication for another is to optimize their overall living experience. Therefore, supporting others to achieve their potential only brings further diversity to this world that we share, and as a result, improves the living experience for us all.

I want to even the playing field for students with special needs; To connect with students and help them feel supported; To be an advocate for students who don’t usually advocate for themselves; To work with other professionals as a team to problem solve how to best help others; To constantly challenge myself to think about learning in different ways; To feel good about what I do at the end of the day.

I do this work because I want to make a positive impact in others’ lives. Communication is essential to all areas of life and if I can help others communicate more clearly, their lives can be improved. Children inspire me because of their enthusiasm and readiness for new adventures/learning. The best service comes from building a relationship with children, families, and others who serve our students. I especially enjoy working with families that may struggle with things such as poverty or feeling like they don’t “fit in.”

I want kids to enjoy communicating and learning, to feel proud of themselves for working toward their goals, and most of all to let each child know that they are loved and important. Watching how kids make connections and seeing positive changes happen for them as a result is the most motivating and exciting part of this work! People fascinate me, and kids are some of the wisest and fun people!

I do this because I’m driven to find that hidden treasure inside of every human being I meet, especially kids. Empowering children to communicate enables us to truly get to know them and discover their strengths, creativity, talent, likes, dislikes, joys, and aspirations. In the process, they learn about themselves and that what they have to give to the world is valuable and unique. I’m a treasure-hunter!

The basic ability to connect with each other is something we often take for granted. I love that as an SLP, we work hard to understand the many complexities of this innate desire and strive to help children, adolescents, and adults achieve these connections. I believe in giving a voice to vulnerable populations through providing tools that can ultimately help them to form relationships with others. Relationships give us support, encouragement, and the motivation to communicate with each other and reach our full potential in life!

Teresa Quiroga, School Psychologist
As the daughter of an adult immigrant to the United States, I was able to directly experience the importance of education as a way of building a life that includes meaningful work, equity, and growth. My own educational experiences have taught me the importance of learning about your unique learning profile and how to learn about learning. Although dyslexia runs in my family we are all avid readers. I love being in schools and collaborating with students, teachers, and families to support success and lifelong learning.

I believe that every day should be about being a better version of our previous self. As we become better versions of ourselves it enables us to empower others toward personal growth and success. By becoming a better me, I can support others in becoming a better them. This, in turn, may lead to them empowering their own families and communities. It is a growth mindset that encourages others to live with intent, purpose, and personal meaning, and to spread the flame of hope and potential. The simplest way to say this is: “Kids (all people) do well if they can,” so let’s give them the tools so they can.

My enthusiasm for speech and language stems from my love for American Sign Language (ASL). Growing up with a mother who was hard-of-hearing, ASL fostered within me a richer understanding of the cultural and sociological underpinnings of communication and language, including that of a largely underrepresented population. I became captivated by a career in which I could help individuals of all populations overcome adversities and obstacles in communication, inclusive of non-speech forms. I am humbled to work in this field, and feel so lucky to both support and inspire self-expression every day.

“Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow” -Anthony D’Angelo. I strongly believe that all people are unique and each individual child’s strengths and needs should be looked at as just that. One of the core reasons I love being a school psychologist is that I have the opportunity to help students, families, and school teams to recognize and celebrate all growth and progress. I believe that every student has the capacity to learn and make growth at their own pace. We should meet students where they are at throughout their educational journey and help them to discover their passions and potential while supporting them to have the necessary tools and skills that they need to engage with their learning.

I believe that all children need an advocate that knows the laws and seeks to provide a fair opportunity to access their education. Education is the most important resource that can be offered to a person. Through the use of data-based decision-making, I try to be that advocate for children and their experience in school.

Stefani Anderson, School Psychologist
In the beginning of my career, my “why” was to advocate for vulnerable populations. I became a school psychologist because I wanted all children with disabilities to have equitable access to a free and appropriate public education. Today, my “why” is so much more than that! In my experiences with students, staff, and families, I have built a passion for strengths-based approaches to diverse abilities and cultures. I believe in educating families on their rights, and being a proponent for IDEA, ADA, and state law as it pertains to schools. Additionally, as the parent of a child with a disability, I know what it feels like to be on the “other side of the table.” This personal experience has enlightened the ways in which I perform my own job duties as a school psychologist with regard to team collaboration, communication, and sensitivity.

I have been interested in working in special education for as long as I can remember. My oldest brother has autism and does not talk. In hindsight, he was my first experience with behavior modification. He didn’t always get to go places because he was loud. As a child, I took pride in helping him to act appropriately so that he could join our family on outings like trips to the mall or attending church. I am a school psychologist because I want to help students and parents understand each child’s unique set of strengths and weaknesses to achieve success now and in the future. I want to feel like I am making a difference when I go to work every day. I enjoy working in a profession that allows me to utilize my strengths as a problem solver and a collaborator.

I’ve always held a strong belief that all children deserve and should have the right to equitable access to the resources that they need to develop into adulthood. I choose to be a conduit for that access. I believe that struggle is necessary and perseverance is a part of life’s growth, however, that should not be a qualifier for a child’s reliance and success. I do what I do, to help children. I do what I do, to help others help children. I do what I do, because I believe in the power of a shared vision of helping children.

I believe that the speech pathology field found me. I’ve always had a desire for helping people but it wasn’t until I took a course in college that this career ignited my passion for speech pathology. I believe that every student deserves to have a team of advocates in their corner, fighting for them to all have equitable access to a free and appropriate education whether that be in the general education or special education setting. Leading with the strengths of all students and using those to help give them the tools that they need to be successful in every capacity. I have so enjoyed playing a role on these teams of advocates to consult with various stakeholders, facilitate some of the tough conversations, use data-based decision making, and stay true to a strengths-based approach to help all students as they learn and grow and navigate their world.

I love being the “detective” in disseminating why a student is struggling. My clinical practice involves a multi-faceted approach of exploring the needs of the whole student. Collaboration, Communication, and Compassion are the tenets of my practice that drive my passion for supporting our students, staff, and families. I am a forever learner and my practice is driven by my research and continual professional development. My former careers as a teacher and a pediatric occupational therapist have provided a solid foundation as a school psychologist. I am grateful to wake up every day and say, “I get to do this!”

Being a school psychologist, I truly believe that every student is capable of learning and being successful, but sometimes there is something that may be hindering their abilities. Whether that is learning style, home life, cognitive abilities, access to resources, and/or mental health, I make sure to capture the whole picture of a child to fully understand them. I am grateful that I am able to be a part of a student’s support system and celebrate their successes both inside and outside of the classroom.

I believe all individuals have something valuable to share with the world. A barrier in communication deprives the world of these unique gifts. We all desire to be seen, heard and validated, just as we are. We also need people who can see and nurture areas that allow us to access our lives and environments in more meaningful and powerful ways. I am honored and feel fortunate to be part of a profession that allows me the opportunity to be part of the process.
